Thinking about Christmas!

We have been using the Thinking Hats to talk about Christmas and what it means to us! Here are some of our ideas.

First of all what is good about Christmas?

You get lots of presents. Jack
I like all the food we eat. Paolo
We get to spend time with our family. Salani

Next we used the black hat to think about the not so good parts of Christmas - or why some people might not look forward to Christmas.

Some people might not be able to afford all the food and presents. Josiah
I don't like helping. Darrin
You don't always get all the presents you want. Paolo
You might not get yummy food. Charlie
Sometimes you eat too much and get a sore tummy.
You have to clean up the house. Grace

Then we used the green thinking hat to think of what we could to do to help someone on Christmas day or round Christmas time.

...my Mum doing the baking. Kodie and Antonia
...my Mum with the food. Salani
...my Nana cook nice stuff. Campbell
...look after my cousin Willie while the parents set the table. Cameron
...my Dad make up the Christmas tree. Josiah
...my Dad wrap up the pressies. Paolo
...my Dad make monkey bars. Jack
...my Dad fix up cars in the garage. Callum

These are the words that tell you how we FEEL about Christmas...

love, excited, yummo, nice, great, exciting, good, hiamo, wana, relaxed, thankful, happy and delighted!

What do you think about Christmas???

Spritzy Sprinters

For the last two weeks we have been discovering the best way to 'take off' when we start running races. First we "take our marks"... (walk up to the line).

Then, we "get set"....

Then, we "go".... run as fast as we can to the finish line. It is important to look at the finish line and not at the people next to you as that might slow you down!

Natty Narratives!

We have been learning how to write proper stories. This type of writing is called a Narrative. You need to have a title, some characters, a setting, a great beginning, a middle and an ending.

This week we have been working on making our first sentences really interesting and having a good beginning, middle and end to our writing.

We used this picture to come up with some ideas for our writing this week.

The Seeker.
Written by Ethan.

It was a hot day in the Castle of Rome. The castle was magical. It had wizards but one wizard betrayed the Romans. The people ran and ran. They were terrified but there was a hero to save the world. He was the Seeker.
The Seeker had a weakness. His dragon was evil now but he had a plan.
He went to the forest and found an army and went back to the castle and saved the world. The they lived happily ever after.

The Key to the Dragon.
Written by Rob

A dragon was flying home. The a boy showed up and the dragon said,
"Why are you so sad little boy?"
"I am the lowest in my school."
"Jump up on me. I can fly higher than the moon and you can come with me on a hunt for treasures."
The boy jumped on the dragon and he flew over the boy's house and looked for treasure. They flew to the dragon's home and told his Mum about the treasure. They found in on a rock. It was a trap and the dragon was trapped.
The dragon tried to get out but he could not get out with all his might but still he could not get out and was killed.
The boy got out safe and went back to the dragon's Mum's home and told his Mum. She cried and cried. The boy was sad and left.

The Legends of the Guardians.
Written by Salani

One day Toto and Nick were out by the lake when there was a big explosion. Toto flew with Nick as fast as he could go. The sky was fiery yellow and misty. The mischievous dragon hunters did the explosion. They wanted Toto but Nick didn't let them take him. Toto was his best friend.
nick took Toto to a land where people loved dragons. There were heaps of dragons. It was a place where the dragon hunters couldn't find Toto and the other dragons.
Toto and Nick bought a house where the could both fit.
They never saw the dragon hunters ever again.

high jump

We have been learning high jump at school. The highest we have jumped so far is sixty9cm.

We have to remember to; scissor kick over the bar, lift the closest leg to the bar first, land on your bottom and run very, very fast.

Yesterday we had a cricket skills lesson with Steve from Otago Cricket.

He taught us lots of things like...how to catch a ball. You should cross your pinkies over to keep your hands together and then close them like a book when the ball lands in there.

We warmed up with a game of snowball tag. We played non stop cricket - half of us were batting and half of us were fielding then we switched over.

It was a fantastic time - we loved it. Thank you Steve!

I like dress up day because normally I don't get to dress up and wear makeup on myself and make myself look really silly.

New Room 4 Blog!

We have begun a new blog folks. It is a place the kids in Room 4 can share their writing with the whole wide world, all by themselves.
The children open up the blog and write straight into the blog and then publish it - all on their lone-somes!
Aren't they clever!

Our Rainforest Adventure

Today we visited a rainforest - right here in Dunedin!
It was in the Otago Museum - Butterfly House.

These words describe how we felt about it...
awesome, exciting, great, happy, wonderful, fun, brilliant, amazing hot, puzzled, interested...

We loved... the butterflies, Discovery World, the bright green gecko, the little birds, the turtles, the waterfall, the tarantulas, the owl butterfly, the musuem trail.

We learned...

Trees can make sugar.
The butterfly life cycle.
Tarantulas shed their skin once a year.
About the food chain in the rainforest.
Butterflies are brightly colour to scare off predators and look like they are poisonous.
How a tree works. They have food pipes and water pipes to help the food and water get up to the leaves. They can breathe in and out air and even water.
The gecko is bright green to blend in.
A butterfly eats with it's proboscis.

Here is the bright green gecko we were lucky enough to see!

Miss Little was a bit scared and surprised when this Owl butterfly landed on her head!

We had a really good look at the tarantula's shredded skin - very cool!

Welcome back everyone!

Kia ora koutou - so excited to be back!

We have lots on this term and we got straight back into the swing of things today and I was VERY proud of the way everyone got down to business!

We had a sneaky peaky look at what we might be discovering about this term for Inquiry, we had to guess what some pictures were and then when we worked out what they were we had a chat about what they all had in common!
Paolo came up with this great idea!

Amazing alliteration.

One way to make our writing more interesting is to use alliteration. It is a sentence or a group of words that have words which start with the same letter. We wrote some awesome sentences using alliteration. Charlie and Kalayias videoed some for you!

Latest artwork!

We looked at Pieter Mondrian's artwork. He used black lines, horizontal and vertical and the primary colours. We created some of our own artwork based on his style!
